Data Quality - O&M Technology and Process Summer Internship

Statkraft has more than 130 years of experience with production of renewable energy. Today, they are Europe's largest supplier of renewable energy and a global market player in energy trading.

Summer intern at the main office in Oslo
The summer of 2023 I was hired by Statkraft to look into their data quality, in relation to historical time series originating from Statkraft's power plants. Over 6 weeks, I worked with Guro Bjørnerud, an Industrial Cybernetics student from Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Our focus centred on the development of tools designed to evaluate and preserve the data quality of historical time series originating from Statkraft's power plantsIn essence, our primary delivery has manifested as a data quality dashboard. This tool offers insights into the data quality of the time series for specified timeframes and selected power plants. Among other information, the dashboard displays an overall data quality percentage of the power plant. This percentage derives its foundation from contributing factors build and designed to alert unfavourable scenarios within the time series.

The internship was a profound learning experience. We deeply studied the data in Statkraft's database, and established a great understanding of the historical time series through usage of Jupyter Notebook. We worked in Statkrafts data analysis platform and the visualisation tool Grafana, essential for the construction, refinement, and delivery of our principal achievement: the data quality dashboard. In parallel, we mapped and arranged for a common understanding of Statkraft's dataflow, from sensor signals at power plants to analytical tools on office computers. We also delivered a couple courses regarding usage of Statkrafts data analysis platform.

We were lucky meeting, working and learning from proficient colleagues across various departments in Statkraft. Guro and I also had the opportunity to visit Jostedal and Leridøla hydropower plants, where we got a firsthand insight in both restoration and operation of these power plants. Through this internship, we were also exposed to several courses, encompassing areas such as Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), Transformers, Hydroelectric Generators, and Presentation Skills & Techniques. Moreover, in the capacity of an international organisation, our roles within Statkraft also presented us with the challenge of English communication.
